An Evening with Filmmaker Rodolphe Rutman

Rodolphe Rutman D Day Documentary screenings :

Join us for this special event : Rodolphe Rutman D Day Documentary screening. A special D-Day 80th anniversary event at the Cinéma LUX on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 7:45 PM. The evening will feature a unique film-debate with renowned filmmaker Rodolphe Rutman, who will be on hand to present two of his powerful documentaries and engage in a post-screening discussion.

7:45 PM: Big Red Omaha

The evening begins with a screening of “Big Red Omaha,” a 2002 documentary by Jacques and Rodolphe Rutman. Before the film, Rodolphe Rutman will provide an introduction.

The film tells the story of the 1st U.S. Infantry Division, “The Big Red One,” and their harrowing experience landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. Through the firsthand accounts of American veterans, many of whom had never returned to Normandy since the war, the documentary provides a raw and powerful look at their mission, code-named Operation Overlord. The testimonies were gathered at three key events: the 2002 reunion of the “Society of the First Infantry Division,” a visit to the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans, and the “2002 Battlefield Tour” in Normandy.

After the first screening, a short intermission will allow for light refreshments.

9:15 PM: Crossed Destinies

The second part of the evening features “Crossed Destinies,” a 2004 documentary directed by Rodolphe Rutman, who will also introduce this film.

This compelling documentary tells the stories of two young men on opposing sides of the conflict: Kenneth, an American, and Franz, a German. Both had their baptism by fire on June 6, 1944, on Omaha Beach, the deadliest of the D-Day landing sites. Sixty years later, each returns to the places where they prepared for war. For the first time, the two former enemies meet on the very ground of their past confrontation. Beyond their personal journeys, the film delves into a complex and painful period of history, using rare archival footage and memories from American, British, German, and French civilians to complement the veterans’ recollections.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with filmmaker Rodolphe Rutman, offering a unique opportunity to learn more about the films and the history they represent.

The ticket price for the entire evening is a special rate of €6, with a reduced price of €3.50 per film for those attending only one screening.

We hope you will join us for the Rodolphe Rutman D Day Documentary screening, an evening of remembrance and reflection on the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom.
