Led by Rodolphe Rutman—a French documentary filmmaker and WWII historian—this British Sector D-Day Discovery Tour offers a powerful, in-depth experience you won’t find anywhere else. Rodolphe has written and directed historical documentaries broadcast on France 2, ARTE, and ZDF, including “Big Red Omaha” and “Destins Croisés”, both focused on the Normandy landings. His storytelling expertise brings each site to life with rich detail and personal accounts. What truly sets this tour apart is its focus on the British airborne missions that unfolded in the first hours of D-Day. You’ll visit Pegasus Bridge, Café Gondrée, the Merville Battery, and the British Normandy Memorial. Our small group sizes ensure a more personal and immersive journey. This is more than a battlefield tour—it’s a moving, expert-led narrative honouring courage, sacrifice, and the British role in the liberation of Normandy. Book now and step into history with a guide who brings the past vividly to life.
Itinerary:
- Pegasus Bridge Memorial – Stop: 90 minutes – Entry fee not included in the tour price. Arrival at the Pegasus Bridge Memorial at 10:30 a.m. This museum recounts the events that took place on the night of June 5-6, 1944, around the Bénouville bridge. It tells the story of the capture of this bridge by British commandos who arrived by air in gliders. The action was swift, and the bridge was renamed “Pegasus Bridge” in 1945 by the authors of this glorious and spectacular episode of D-Day.
- Stèle Lieutenant R.A. SMITH – Stop: 25 minutes. Visit to the “Glider Marker 1 & Marker 2” memorial stones, duration 25 minutes. The memorial stones mark the location where the gliders landed.
- Café Gondrée – Stop: 15 minutes. Visit to Café Gondrée for 15 minutes. This café went down in history as the first house in France to be liberated by the Allied forces on June 6, 1944.
- Benouville – Stop: 60 minutes. A 60-minute break for lunch at any of the restaurant/food outlets in the town.
- Museum and the Merville Battery site – Stop: 2 hours – Entry fee not included in the tour price. Arrival at 2 p.m. at the Merville Battery Museum for 120 minutes. This reinforced German position was an artillery position belonging to the “Atlantic Wall.” A visit here provides insight into the coastal defence systems deployed by German forces to prevent an invasion by Allied armies from the sea. Visitors can also learn about the lifestyle of the German occupation troops. A visit to the Merville Battery will also provide insight into the assault on this position on the night of June 5-6, 1944, by British paratroopers from the 6th Airborne Division, who arrived by air.
- Pass by – Sword Beach, Juno Beach, Gold Beach.
- British Normandy Memorial – Stop: 70 minutes. Arrival at the British Normandy Memorial at around 5:15 p.m. Inaugurated on June 6, 2021, this memorial site pays tribute to the 22,442 soldiers under British command who died during the Battle of Normandy, which took place between June 6 and August 31, 1944.
